While everyone’s experience may vary, of course, we want to give you an idea of what’s typical after varicose vein treatment, and give you the answers to what many patients ask about before and after their treatment.
First, most vein specialists will instruct their patients to wear 20-30 mmHg compression stockings after their treatment for at least the first 24 hours. This includes the period while you sleep that first night. This is to help control bleeding and pain, plus prevent any complications with a vein opening up. You’ll likely be fitted in the varicose vein treatment office so that precise and accurate measurements can be taken and a good fitting can be achieved.
After the first 24 hours, it is quite common for vein doctors to instruct their post-op patients to wear compression hose during the day but take them off at night. It depends on the procedure and the condition of other veins in your legs, but this will usually go on for one to three weeks. You’ll be instructed to put them on first thing in the morning BEFORE any swelling occurs due to gravity and your daily activities.
At the same time, you’ll most likely be instructed to walk at least three times a day, usually beginning the day of your varicose vein treatment. Walking helps the healing process occur at a faster rate as it will stimulate your veins to find a new pathway for the blood flow in your legs after the ablated veins are no longer able to transport blood.
Patients often get concerned if they see bruising, redness, or swelling around the site of the procedure. However, you should be comforted by the fact that this is usually perfectly normal and can occur for a variety of reasons. In many cases, the ablated veins, as they begin disintegrate, become brittle. This can cause inflammation of the area, which in turn can cause redness, swelling, and bruising. It may also cause a bit of mild pain or discomfort. Typically, this will go away over time. Only in a small percentage of cases is there any type of permanent discoloring of the skin. So, just try to be patient as your body works its magic in reabsorbing those ablated veins!
Almost all vein doctors will do at least two follow up duplex (doppler) ultrasound scans of the area after your varicose vein treatment. The first one is primarily to determine if there is any sort of complication. This usually occurs within one week of your procedure. Further, if you call in with any type of problem, typically your vein specialist will have you come right in for a duplex ultrasound scan to check on the issue from the inside, in addition to a visual exam of course.
The second follow up duplex ultrasound scan will usually take place around three to four weeks after the procedure. This is to check again that there are no complications and to make sure everything is healing as it should. Some vein specialists will also want to do a third follow up duplex ultrasound at about two to three months after your varicose vein treatment. Whether or not you have a third follow up duplex ultrasound varies a lot between doctors and may depend on whether or not you have other damaged veins or medical complications such as diabetes or obesity.
Typically, you should start to feel like yourol’ normal self in about a week to a month. Most patients go back to all their normal activities, including a full work schedule the same week they have the procedure. Most exercises will be approved by your vein doctor, although you should check with him or her first to make sure. They may ask you to cut back a bit at first and to pay close attention to any signals from your body, such as pain, to stop. At any rate, get ready to be more active because you’re probably going to feel much better after your treatment.
